Cat Skid Steer Attachments — Compatibility Guide
Caterpillar skid steers and compact track loaders are known for their build quality, ROPS/FOPS cab protection, and high hydraulic performance. The 200-series and D-series machines are common on Canadian heavy construction sites, oil field work, and municipal operations. Quick-attach compatibility and flow specs by model — here's what you need to know.
Cat's skid steer lineup (200-series wheeled, D-series compact track loaders) covers a wide range from compact machines to high-capacity units. They're known for operating in demanding conditions and holding value well on the used market. Cat's dealer network in Canada is strong in Alberta, BC, and Ontario — critical for parts and service support on remote job sites. Hydraulic performance is generally at the top end of each size class.

Quick-Attach System: Cat IT Coupler vs Universal
Cat uses their IT Coupler system — this is worth understanding before buying attachments:
- Cat IT Coupler attachments mount directly to Cat machines. These are OEM Cat attachments (work tools in Cat terminology) and fit without adapters.
- Universal quick-attach (QA) attachments — the industry standard — are NOT directly compatible with IT Coupler. You need a Cat universal QA adapter plate to run standard third-party attachments on a Cat skid steer. This adapter is widely available through Cat dealers and aftermarket suppliers.
- The adapter works well in practice. Many Cat operators run the universal QA adapter permanently and buy all attachments in universal QA format — giving them the broadest selection and the ability to run attachments across multiple brands of machines.
Cat IT Coupler ≠ Universal QA. This is the most common compatibility mistake Cat operators make. Before buying any third-party attachment for a Cat machine, confirm whether you have the universal QA adapter plate installed. If you don't have it, order one — it's a one-time purchase that opens up the entire market of universal QA attachments.

What to Ask Your Dealer
- "Does this machine have the universal quick-attach adapter plate, or is it IT Coupler only?" This determines your third-party attachment options. If it doesn't have the adapter, budget for one.
- "What is the aux hydraulic flow — standard and high-flow if equipped?" High-flow is an option on the 246D3 and above. Confirm it's active, not just hardware-capable.
- "What operating pressure is this machine running on the aux circuit?" The 272D3 XHP runs at 3,625 PSI — higher than most other skid steer brands. This is an advantage for some breakers but can be outside spec for others.
- "Is the XHP (Extra Hydraulic Performance) option installed on this unit?" XHP provides the highest aux flow output on the 272D3. Not all units have it configured.
