Sizing Guide
Bit diameter determines hole size. Fence posts: 6–9 inches. Small trees and sign posts: 9–12 inches. Large trees, utility poles, and light footings: 12–18 inches. Heavy construction footings: 18–24 inches. For fence work, a 9-inch bit in clay produces cleaner holes than a smaller bit — the slight oversize lets you check depth and tamp properly.
Hydraulic Flow
Standard-flow drive units run on 10–18 GPM — compatible with most mid-frame machines without high-flow. High-torque drive units require 18–30 GPM and are designed for rock, heavy clay, and larger diameter bits. Mismatching an underpowered standard-flow machine with a high-torque drive unit means poor penetration and overheating. Check your machine's GPM before selecting a drive unit.

McMillen (US-made, strong Canadian dealer support, reliable for high-cycle work), Baumalight (BC-based, ships direct across Canada, excellent support), Pengo (high-torque leader, good for rock and heavy clay), TMG Industrial (budget, fine for light fence post work). Buying the bit before the drive unit. The drive unit's GPM requirement is the critical constraint — buy the drive unit to match your machine first, then select bits. Buying a fancy bit for a mismatched drive unit is wasted money.

Your machine's GPM decides which drive units you can run. That is the gating issue. A mismatched drive wastes time, runs hot, and makes every hole harder than it needs to be.

Standard earth bits are for loam and clay. Rock and frost bits are the real requirement in shield rock, hardpan, caliche, and frozen Prairie soil. Tree planting and footing work usually need different diameters too.
