Buyer's Guide — Cement Mixers

▲ Collapse
Skid steer cement mixer attachments let you mix and place concrete at the job site without a transit mixer — practical for fence posts, footings, small slabs, and remote pours where a concrete truck can't reach or isn't justified. The hydraulically driven drum mixes 6–16 cubic feet per batch. These are relatively simple attachments with low hydraulic demand — almost any machine with auxiliary hydraulics can run a cement mixer. The main considerations are drum capacity relative to your typical pour size, and whether you're mixing dry bags or want to add aggregate.

Sizing Guide

A 6-cubic-foot drum handles most fence post and footing work — roughly 1.5 bags of premix at a time. Step up to 9–12 cubic feet for larger footings and small slab sections. 16 cubic feet is for production work where you're doing multiple sequential pours. Each batch takes 5–10 minutes to mix — estimate your required pour volume and work backward to select drum size.

Hydraulic Flow

Cement mixers are low-demand standard-flow attachments. They typically require only 8–15 GPM — within range of virtually any skid steer with auxiliary hydraulics. No high-flow required. This makes them one of the most universally compatible hydraulic attachments available.

Brands in Canada

TMG Industrial (strong range, good price, widely available in Canada), Bobcat (dealer-supported), Virnig (heavier construction), general Canadian equipment supply brands. Cement mixers are mechanically simple — brand choice is mainly about drum build quality and the drumframe mounting design.

⚠ Most Common Mistake

Not pre-wetting the drum before first use. Fresh concrete bonds permanently to a dry drum. Always add water and a small amount of coarse aggregate before your first real batch on a new or long-idle mixer — this prevents concrete from caking on the drum interior, which is nearly impossible to remove once cured.

Frequently Asked Questions

What drum size should I choose for my typical concrete pours?
A 6-cubic-foot drum handles most fence post and small footing work — roughly 1.5 bags of premix at a time. Step up to 9–12 cubic feet for larger footings and small slab sections. Each batch takes 5–10 minutes to mix — estimate your required pour volume and work backward. If you're regularly doing pours larger than a 6 cubic foot batch can supply, step up to avoid constant reloading interruptions.
Do cement mixers require high-flow hydraulics?
No — cement mixers are low-demand standard-flow attachments, typically requiring only 8–15 GPM. This is within range of virtually any skid steer with auxiliary hydraulics. No high-flow required. Cement mixers are one of the most universally compatible hydraulic attachments available — if your machine has basic aux hydraulics, it can run a mixer.
Can I mix concrete with aggregate in a skid steer drum mixer?
Yes — you can mix dry cement, sand, and aggregate (gravel) in the drum, adding water during mixing. Load aggregate and sand first, then cement, then add water gradually while the drum turns. This is the standard process for site-batched concrete. Larger aggregate (over 1.5 inches) can cause wear on the drum mixing fins over time — size your aggregate appropriately for the drum capacity.
Are cement mixers available in Canada?
Yes. TMG Industrial has the widest Canadian range with good national availability. Bobcat mixers come through their dealer networks. Virnig offers heavier-construction models. Cement mixers are mechanically simple — brand choice mainly affects drum build quality and mounting frame design. TMG is the most commonly purchased Canadian option for the price point.
Skid steer drum mixer vs transit mixer — when does each make sense?
Transit mixers (concrete trucks) make sense for large pours (1 cubic yard or more), accessible sites, and jobs where timing with a sub-trade is important. Skid steer mixers make sense for remote sites with no road access, small batch pours spread across a large area (multiple footings on a farm), jobs where a transit truck can't maneuver, or projects where you're batching intermittently over multiple days.
How long does a batch take to mix?
A standard batch takes 3–7 minutes of continuous drum rotation after all materials are loaded and water is added. Richer mixes (higher cement content) or larger aggregate may need a minute or two longer. The test: the mix should be uniformly colored with no dry clumps or visible aggregate pockets before you discharge. Under-mixed concrete has weak, inconsistent spots.
How do I maintain a cement mixer drum?
Pre-wet the drum with water and a handful of coarse aggregate before first use and after any idle period — prevents concrete from bonding to dry drum walls. Flush immediately after every pour with water and gravel. Never let mixed concrete cure in the drum — it bonds permanently and is extremely difficult to remove. Grease drum bearing mounts and hydraulic motor drive shaft weekly during active use.
