Buyer's Guide — Trenchers

▲ Collapse
Skid steer trencher attachments cover utility runs, drainage lines, irrigation, and fence lines efficiently — 86 models from Virnig, John Deere, Bobcat, Bradco, Blue Diamond, and TMG Industrial. Chain trenchers handle most Canadian soil conditions: clay, loam, prairie hardpan, and gravel. Rock wheels are the answer when you hit Canadian Shield rock or heavy caliche where chain wear becomes cost-prohibitive. Most models require high auxiliary flow (18–30 GPM); sizing a trencher to your machine's hydraulic output is the single most important spec check before purchasing.

Sizing Guide

For utility and irrigation work, a 6-inch wide chain at 36-inch depth covers the majority of jobs. Water service lines and irrigation mains: 4–6 inches wide, 36–48 inches deep. Drainage tile: 6–8 inches wide, 18–36 inches deep. Fence line post holes via trenching: 6–8 inches wide, 24–36 inches deep. Match chain width to your pipe diameter plus working room — 4-inch pipe in a 4-inch trench leaves no room for bedding.

Hydraulic Flow

Most chain trenchers require 18–30 GPM high-flow. Standard-flow machines are limited to smaller, lighter-duty models with narrower chains in easier soil. Confirm your machine's hydraulic output before selecting a trencher. Rock wheels have even higher demand — verify carefully.

Brands in Canada

Virnig (US-made, strong Canadian dealer presence), John Deere (dealer-supported, solid warranty), Bobcat (dealer network, proprietary coupler), Bradco (chain trencher specialist, widely available), Blue Diamond (solid mid-tier value), TMG Industrial (light-duty budget option for soft soil). Bradco and Virnig are the most common choices for Canadian utility and irrigation contractors.

⚠ Most Common Mistake

Underestimating Canadian soil. Prairie hardpan, glacial till with gravel, and shield rock all require specific chain and tooth configurations. Budget the time to confirm soil conditions before committing to a chain type — the wrong chain in the wrong soil burns through teeth quickly and stalls constantly.

Trencher attachments cover utility runs, drainage lines, irrigation trenches, and fence lines — 86 models from Virnig, John Deere, Bobcat, Bradco, Blue Diamond, and TMG Industrial. Chain trenchers suit most soil conditions; typical configurations cut 6–48 inches deep at 4–8 inch widths. Rock wheels are the answer for Canadian Shield and caliche where chain wear becomes cost-prohibitive. Most models require 18–30 GPM — confirm your machine's hydraulic output before sizing a trencher.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do trenchers require high-flow hydraulics?
Most chain trenchers require high-flow hydraulics (18–30 GPM). Standard-flow machines are limited to smaller, lighter-duty trenchers in easier soil. Rock wheels have even higher demands. Confirm your machine's hydraulic output before selecting a trencher — an underpowered machine in tough soil means very slow penetration and potential drive motor overheating.
Chain trencher vs rock wheel — which do I need?
Chain trenchers with carbide teeth handle most Canadian soil conditions: clay, loam, Prairie hardpan, and sandy gravel. Rock wheels are for Canadian Shield rock and heavy caliche where chain wear becomes cost-prohibitive in hours, not days. If you're occasionally hitting rock in otherwise normal soil, a rock chain (not a standard dirt chain) on a standard trencher is the middle ground.
What depth and width for standard utility and irrigation work?
For utility and irrigation work, a 6-inch-wide chain at 36-inch depth covers the majority of jobs. Water service lines typically need 36–48 inches of cover for frost protection in Canada. Drainage tile runs at 18–36 inches. Fence line work: 6–8 inches wide, 24–36 inches deep. Always add bedding room — 4-inch pipe in a 4-inch trench leaves no room for bedding material.
Are trenchers available in Canada?
Yes. Virnig has strong Canadian dealer presence. Bradco is a chain trencher specialist widely available across Canada. John Deere is available through dealer networks. Blue Diamond offers good mid-tier value. TMG Industrial handles light-duty soft-soil work. Bradco and Virnig are the most common choices for Canadian utility and irrigation contractors.
Can I trench through frozen ground in winter?
Standard chain trenchers in frozen Prairie soil are extremely slow and hard on chains — frost hardness comparable to soft rock. Options: wait until spring thaw, use a hydraulic breaker to break the frost layer first, or use a specialized frost chain configuration. For utility emergency repairs in winter, a hydraulic breaker to break the frost layer + trenching the thawed material is the most practical approach.
How do I maintain a trencher chain?
Inspect chain teeth after every use — worn teeth slow penetration dramatically and increase drive motor load. Lubricate the drive chain and boom sprockets before each use and again after every 4 hours of operation. Check the boom for cracking or deformation after work in rocky or abrasive soil. Clean soil from the drive motor and chain case to prevent overheating in warm weather. Store the chain with teeth protected from ground contact.
Do I need to call before I dig in Canada?
Yes — always. In Canada, call 1-800-242-3447 (Click Before You Dig) or the provincial equivalent (BC One Call, Alberta One Call, Ontario One Call, etc.) at least 3 business days before breaking ground. This is a legal requirement in most provinces. Utility strikes are expensive, dangerous, and often result in contractor liability. No exceptions.
