Grapples handle what buckets can't — loose brush, root balls, demolition debris, and unsorted rock. With 214 models across several jaw types, the primary decision is jaw style: root grapples use open tines that grab and sort irregular material like brush, stumps, and scrub; clamshell grapple buckets enclose their load for carrying demolition debris and loose aggregate cleanly. Getting this choice wrong means dropping material constantly or working inefficiently. Secondary specs — jaw opening width, tine count, cylinder count, and closing force — separate models within each type and determine how much material you can grab per cycle.

Sizing Guide

Match jaw width to your machine's frame width. Mid-frame machines (most common in Canada) suit 66–78-inch jaw widths. Large-frame machines handle 78–84 inches. Wider isn't better if your machine lacks the breakout force to close the jaws under load — pay attention to the closing force spec, especially for root and stump work where resistance is high.

Hydraulic Flow

Most grapples use two hydraulic cylinders and run on standard auxiliary flow (10–18 GPM). Industrial log and pipe grapples sometimes have higher flow demands. Standard-flow machines handle the full range of typical root grapples and clamshell models without issue. High-flow grapples exist but are uncommon and not needed for most land clearing or construction work.

For Canadian acreage and oilfield work, HLA is the most accessible and locally-supported option.

⚠ Most Common Mistake

Using a root grapple for demolition debris. Open tines let concrete chunks, rebar, and rubble fall through constantly. Get a clamshell-style grapple bucket for demolition — it contains the load. Similarly, don't use a clamshell for brush; it clogs and can't sort material.

Standard-flow machines can handle the full range of typical land clearing and demolition grapples.
Root grapple vs clamshell grapple bucket — which do I need?
Root grapples have open tines for grabbing and sorting irregular material: brush piles, stumps, demolition debris, and mixed site waste. They let material fall through so you can sort. Clamshell grapple buckets enclose their load — better for demolition rubble, concrete chunks, and loose aggregate where you need to contain and carry. Using a root grapple for demolition debris means constant dropping. Know your primary application before choosing.
What size grapple jaw width for a mid-frame machine?
Mid-frame machines (most common in Canada) suit 66–78-inch jaw widths. Match jaw width to your machine's frame — going too wide reduces breakout force and makes tight work difficult.
